Excellent trip partner!
I have all my families ipods & iphones using it. It works really fine. Only minus is that the portable battery takes a while to charge your device, but, given that you keep using it, it is a ver minor problem.

Dock ok, battery doesn't work
Battery pack didn't connect securely to my 3GS, so it wouldn't charge at all. Dock is fine.

Kensigton charger kit
I have used Kensingto chargers before. These didn't seem to hold a charge as long - or maybe my imagination. I wish the red/blue/green lights gave a better indication - yes I re-read the directions.
I like the ease of use for this product.

unable to charge battery pack and phone together
I may have had a bad battery pack. The charging dock wasn't able to charge both phone and battery pack together. When I thought the battery pack was charged - I connected it to the phone and nothing happened. When I connected power to the battery pack - which was connected to the phone - the phone would charge.
I decided to return the battery pack and charging dock. Guess I'll have to find something else

A must have...
Everyone knows the battery is one of the biggest weak points on the iPhone. This is even more true overseas in Japan, where there are only 3g networks. This is a must have, allowing you to use your phone as much as you want during the day, without worrying about being phone-less come lunch.
Like everyone has said, the dock is made for an iPod, but has an adapter for the iPhone. This adapter is like all other dock adapters, in that it does not allow for a case. Invest in a case with a removable bottom, or one that is easy to take off if you plan to purchase this dock.
Also, when I received my dock, the usb cable was not in the box. Luckily I had one laying around for charging a PS3 controller.
A positive feature I was unaware of: You can use this in lieu of a traditional docking cable when syncing your iphone with your computer! It may have been in the description, but I was not expecting this, as most iPod devices hate the iPhone, and barely function as they should with it, if at all.
Overall, worth the money. Order a case while you are at it.
